An indictment charged cardiologist Niranjan Mittal in connection with a scheme to fabricate patient records, pay physicians for patient referrals, and bill for medically unnecessary vascular procedures. According to the indictment, patients were referred to his clinic, often without knowing why, and given tests, procedures, and follow-up visits not based on their needs. Rather, he and others ordered these tests and office visits to create documentation sufficient to justify subjecting patients to unnecessary surgical procedures focused on clearing purported blockages in the blood vessels in patients’ legs.
