As the SMP National Resource Center reported in April, a federal jury convicted a Kentucky physician of health care fraud after hearing evidence he implanted medically unnecessary pacemakers. On October 30, a judge sentenced him to serve 42 months in federal prison. He also must pay a $50,000 fine and repay $257,515 to Medicare, Medicaid, and other private insurers who were financial victims of his scheme. Read a Department of Justice press release.
