A federal jury has convicted a physician of health care fraud after hearing evidence he implanted medically unnecessary pacemakers and caused the unnecessary procedures and follow-up care to be billed to health insurance programs. The evidence at trial showed that dozens of pacemakers were medically unnecessary under well-established national guidelines and Medicare coverage rules. Some patients testified that he pressured them into getting the procedures and told them misleading information about their health conditions.
